Brazil

The Ursuline sisters came to Brazil also thanks to an invitation of the Scalabrinians who had known them from the cooperation in Argentina. The first two sisters came from Argentina to Brazil on January 29, 1971. They lived in the parish house in Rondinhia and committed themselves to pastoral work in the parish church and 17 branch chapels. What is more, they worked in the parish office and sacristy and catechized young people. From 1974, the sisters have run a community centre for children in school age and household courses for women. Also, they have given help to the poorest. In the course of time, the Congregation opened other houses in Brazil. At the moment, there are seven Ursuline communities in Brazil – three in Curitiba and two in Primavera do Leste, in Cuiabá and Várzea Grande...

Curitiba

In the Uberaba quarter the sisters are occupied with pastoral work for children and youth. They visit families and sick people. In the Rocio parish the sisters with the help of four lay people run a kindergarten for about 70 children. In Vila União, a poor district in the outskirts of the town, a kindergarten for about 70 children is run.

The little community (two sisters) in Cuiabá is involved in catechetical and pastoral work in the parish church as well as in the chapels belonging to the parish.

In one of the communities in Primavera do Leste, the sisters are busy with the coordination of work in a school for 400 children and lead a group of Spiritual Exercises for adults and youth. In the other community the sisters’ work comprises catechesis and the coordination of catechesis in a few local chapels. The sisters are occupied with pastoral work for children, youth, women, sick people and with charitable help for poor families. They lead an “Adoption at Distance” office coordinating help for around 420 families. The everyday service of the sisters in both communities is also to visit sick and agonizing people and to accompany the families of deceased.

In Várzea Grande Ursuline sisters are responsible for the organization and coordination of catechesis in several chapels belonging to the parish. They take part in the formation and preparation of materials for catechists, in the formation of youth groups, in family and vocation ministry. Moreover, they visit sick people. The sisters are also involved in an education centre for inhabitants of the poor districts.
